Ralph Larmann, born in 1963, studied percussion with a focus on popular music at the Rotterdam Conservatory. Parallel to playing the drums, he turned to photography and journalism in the late 1980s. Since then, Larmann has created countless complex photo documentaries on national and international stages and on the most diverse productions, capturing them for eternity in fascinating images. Since January 2019, Ralph Larmann has been a SONY European Imaging Ambassador.
In his illustrated books STAGE DESIGN and STAGEDESIGN EMOTIONS, he has summarized 58 productions from the fields of theater, opera, musicals, concert tours, TV shows and special events on 400 pages each. Each production is rich in visual detail and photographed from perspectives that are usually inaccessible to the public. Under the title "THE CHARM OF LIVE STAGE DESIGN", a "Ralph Larmann illustrated book" in Chinese was published for the first time in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong in May 2012. The third STAGE DESIGN book is expected to be published in late 2024.
In October 2012, Ralph Larmann, in collaboration with the band U2 and author Dylan Jones, published "FROM THE GROUND UP, the official coffee table book for the fabulous U2 360° WORLD TOUR. In November 2017, the band AC/DC together with Larmann published the first official AC/DC coffee table book for the world tour "ROCK OR BUST ". With the ED SHEERAN "DIVIDE" and U2 "360°" world tour, Larmann photographed the two most successful concert tours of all time as the official photographer.
